The not so Pakistani Society

It sickens me to see rallies in favor of Dr. Aafia – who was intending mass murders of innocent lives of Muslim and non Muslims alike – and possibly jeopardizing and tarnishing the reputation of her own religion, Islam. It hurts me to see progressive and liberal parties taking the same stance the rightist and Islamic parties had taken. MQM filling Karachi up by thousands of protesters for Aafia and PPP announcing to do “everything” in order to bring her to Pakistan.

It really makes me wonder, if we will continue to live in denials and disbelieves of being a perfect and “pure” society or will we start living like a true “Pak”istani. Our issues seem to be restoring a bunch judges due to their perceived “moral” stance against a dictator, or striking down a “national reconciliation ordinance” and restarting the corruption cases which were created in a corrupt manner to begin with. And to top it all off we got Dr. Aafia Siddiqui – a convicted terrorist – to lead our list of national priorities.

As I read and hear of the atrocities and crimes committed against women in our great nation, I am forced to question, how many of those protesters at the Aafia rally actually respect and treat their wives with dignity at home. How can we change when our, twenty-first century’s self proclaim, preachers and television pundits teach the otherwise.

The right politics, I believe, is the politics that leads us to self correct ourselves. The politics that forces us to look within and not be hypocritical. Not talk of corruption when we know the whole society is corrupt, but try finding solution that will solve our everyday problems so we will be less corrupt. Not look at how other countries are treating their citizens but start treating ours with respect and dignity and give them their human rights. Treat all citizens equally – regardless of their color, creed, sex, sect, or caste – and give them all equal constitutional rights and freedom to practice their believes however they wish to.

For all I know is that “God will not change the condition of the people until they change what is within themselves.”- 13:11 Quran.
